If you ever wondered if China was the upcoming superpower

21 03 2008

A study recently done by comScore highlights that right now only 23% of the web users are from the US. In 1996 this used to be 66%. The upcoming country obviously is China. Although the US still has the largest absolute number of internet users (162 million), China already has 96 million. But more interestingly maybe is that in China (and other emerging countries), they main websites visits are not the ones we all know, such as Google or Yahoo. No in those countries homegrown websites have the most users.

So in the future Google might be just a small company :-)

Rudice Cave

16 03 2008

Yesterday we visited Rudice Cave in Czech. The whole cave system is 12 kilometer long, we walked, crawled and descended and climbed ladders for about 4 hours through this cave. Below you can find the pictures. It was really a good experience, but once again it shows that I don’t have any condition. We had to go 153 meters deep under the small village of Rudice. Most of the climbing down was on ladders. Of course to get out, we had to get back on all those ladders again :-( .

But it was a real good experience to do it. We went through the cave system up to a room called Obri Dom. This room is 70 meters high. To get there we had to walk through water, about knee high at some points. The cave was formed by a river, which still runs through the system. At places where the water was too high, there were ropes, that we could use to get over the water. Also at one place we had to crawl though a really small passage.

Have a look at the pictures, they say way more then what I can write up here.

Visiting a cave

14 03 2008

Tomorrow we will go into a cave in Czech. But not a normal visit, but actually as a speleologist. Last year when we married, Dagmar gave us that as a wedding present. Only now we managed to make an appointment. You can find more info at Uzij si to. Apparently Macocha  is the deepest cave in the middle of Europe. I assume we will be all wet and dirty when we get out, but that is good. Have a look on Monday, we should be able to make some pictures.

Have a look at this amazing video. Jill Bolte Taylor is a scientist researching the brain, and got a stroke herself. She is telling about the experience at the TED conference this year. Really amazing.

Viewing this blog on your mobile

10 03 2008

I have just experimented a bit with a tool called wirenode. It allows you to build pages formatted for mobile phones (or cellphones as our American friends call them). It also have a nice tool to convert a blog into a mobile phone page automatically, so you can now also find this blog on http://koerner.wirenode.mobi/. I’m still playing with it, so it might not look nice yet, but that will come (hopefully).
